BOSTON SOCIETY OF FILM CRITICS ANNOUNCES AWARDS CEREMONY

EVENT SET FOR JAN. 13 AT THE BRATTLE THEATER

BOSTON — The Boston Society of Film Critics (BSFC) will launch its first-ever awards ceremony honoring the best films and performances of 2007. The event will feature a screening of one of the top films of the year and an appearance by a special guest. The event will take place Sunday, January 13, 2008 at the Brattle Theatre, Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA.

The ceremony, open to the public, includes a cocktail reception at 5 p.m. that will provide attendees with the opportunity to meet and mingle with Boston’s top film critics. A screening of one of the BSFC honored films follows at 7 p.m. An invited guest, to be announced, will engage in a post-screening Q and A with the audience.

Further details about the ceremony will be announced after the BSFC selects its end-of-the-year awards on December 9, 2007.

“This ceremony offers an exciting opportunity for the BSFC to showcase who we are to the local film community and celebrate film excellence in front of and behind the camera,” said Loren King, BSFC president. “A few critics groups in cities such as Los Angeles have year-end award ceremonies, but this is a first for Boston. By teaming with the Brattle, we hope to provide an entertaining event for audiences and lay the groundwork for future ceremonies.”

Formed in 1981, the BSFC is made up of 20 professional film critics working in the print and broadcast media in and around Boston. Members vote for year-end awards in the following categories: best picture, director, foreign film, actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, screenplay, cinematography, best ensemble, documentary and best new filmmaker. A BSFC subcommittee selects the best local programming of the year at non-profit theaters, institutions and societies.
